Mary Alice Volkert is a Registered and Licensed Dietitian and a Certified Diabetes Educator.  Working with each patient individually, Mary Alice focuses on his or her special concerns such as diabetes, weight control, high cholesterol and gastro-intestinal problems.  Depending on the patient’s food preferences and lifestyle, she calculates a meal plan to achieve the desired goals in a healthy way.  Mary Alice does not advocate radical low calorie diets, nor does she sell supplement pills or other temporary aids.  She believes that moderate calories combined with increased activity and behavior modification are needed to make permanent lifestyle changes.

 

WHAT TO EXPECT ON THE FIRST VISIT

 

The first visit is a two-hour consultation.  During this visit there will be an explanation of any medical concerns, review of lab data provided by the patient’s physician, and an assessment of the patient’s nutrition.  There will also be a plan made to achieve dietary and activity goals.

 

For diabetic and glucose-intolerant patients, the initial consultation will also include instructions in or review of self-blood glucose monitoring, the basics of diabetes, as well as the functions of diabetes medication.

 

Insulin Management can be provided when necessary.  Insulin Management visits include instructions for injection administration, insulin care, as well as treatment and prevention of Hyper- and Hypoglycemia.  A Take Home Kit will be provided.

 

Follow up visits cover a wide range of topics, including, but not limited to, an assessment of food and activity diaries, stress management, dining out, fast foods, hidden fats, and label reading.  During these visits, diabetic patients will cover blood glucose results, apparent needs for any insulin adjustments or oral medication doses, instructions for “Sick Day” rules, traveling with diabetes, and possible complications from diabetes.
